Notes on Iran.

Kurt Nimmo writes about the upcoming invasion of Iran. I'm not convinced that it will happen, myself, but I don't believe that it is impossible either. Anti-imperialism is always important for the Left, that parts of the so-called Social Democrats in various guises and in various governments have abandoned international solidarity only goes to show in a clear light what sort they have become.

If Iran is invaded; what is there to do? It seems like a madman's move. The Iranians will cut off the Persian Gulf and burn their oilfields. Oil prices will skyrocket, creating a massive disruption in the long chains of supply and goods of the world. I'm not certain that the United States would ever take that risk, not when there is so much for them to lose. But who knows? They still have the most powerful military force in the world, and they are still the hegemonic power. More and more countries that carry their prized oil are dropping off the map.

Myself, I wouldn't be surprised if another proxy war happens. Through Israel, possibly, heavily supplied by the US. Not that shit won't hit the fan, of course, but perhaps with the United States less implicated in the West, backed by legions of loyal liberal newspapers.

Solidarity with the people of Iran is the same as always: solidarity with the masses and hatred of their masters. The working class of the Middle East faces the twin problems of internal fascists and external imperialists. The hammer and the anvil. But, as ever, el pueblo unido..

American Communists defend Chavez.

The American Communist Party NYC Chairperson, Elena Mora battles Neocons and absurd American TV hosts in a debate over Venezuela. It is not perhaps fantastic in itself, but it is more than interesting in relation to a specific mindset. The fanatical privatization model that the neocons are driving is in many ways ironic. While they claim nationalization (to be more exact: socializaton) is what will create the next crisis for the US, fueled by the pseudo-science of economics, the hunt for profit and the blindness of their own ideology.

On another, more internal note, I am happy to see the CPUSA move in a healthy direction with it's support of Venezuela. In the past there has been too much reminiscing about the Soviet Union and China.

Internationalism

With the fascist-reactionary wave that is wavering in Europe it is necessary for the working class movements to take back one of it's best ideals: international solidarity. Though the Social Democrats have long since turned it into the same thing as all "solidarity": some sort of loose, moral code to follow, it is more than that. It is one of the most important cornerstones of socialism. If I don't protect my neighbour, how can he protect me? The tragic consequences of the failiure of the First Internationale in World War I is the typical example of what happens when the working class is split on national issues.

International solidarity is not just a question of the Prisoners Dilemma, however. It is also a reservoir of strength in the ability to organize, maintain structure and carry on the long history of the working class in a more continous fashion than what can be done in a single nation or region. With the European Union battered but not broken and with a world that - even if the globalists are wrong - is shrinking, we have to pose an alternative. Tactically, it can sometimes be useful to rally around a nation-state as a bastion for parliamentary power but strategically it is devastating.

There are more trans-continental unions now, but I fear that the communists have lost their internationalism in the long retreat since the Soviet Union fell (a stupid, but understandeable response: I suppose that the Left still had some hope for the Union somewhere deep down. But even the Trots were in disarray). However, to regroup and recuperate we must have a new Internationale - or something alike it. Most reformed communist parties are now wavering somewhere in the air of liberal humanism or social democratic reformism. I'm not so sure that Communism or Social Democracy (as the two terms originally meant) are such good labels anymore, but I won't get into that more on this post.

Jag är livrädd.

I denna uppochnervända världen har plötsligt absurditeten krupit in i våra TV-soffor igen.

Något sker i politiken.

Vi river landet - a blast from the past.

Fanciful Hopes on Iraq.

With the occupation nearing it's fourth year and the Iraqi people drowning in it's own blood it is hard not to grasp for the first source of hope that you can find. It appears that the American tactic in Iraq is to divide and conquer: fan the flames of sectarian and ethnic divides through sponsoring the death squads from the Ministry of Interior, federalize Iraq, endless talking in the international press of shia and sunni, etc.

Of course, the important things are happening now. The Iraqi oil is going to be privatized, that is, forcefully stolen from a people without their say in it. Though lacking healthcare, a functioning infrastructure, security and mostly employment Iraqis are now facing the loss of the lifeblood of their economy.

But there is hope. One of the cornerstones in orientalist ideology is that they are not like us: they are preoccupied with sensualist or mystical activities. They are something else that are not us. This ideology serves the same purpose now as it did a hundred or two hundred years ago. It is hard for european or american workers to feel solidarity with someone you seem to have nothing in common with. I've written before about the Iraqi labour union, I believe, and this is about them once more. Like all the arabic nations, socialism and the labour movement has been instrumental in the development of the 20th century politics and nation-states that exist in the Middle East. If Iraqi Labour does indeed turn against it's occupant as they attempt the privatization: who knows what would happen? Personally, I can rest assured that the gendarmes of the Iraqi puppet regime and the combatants in the American and British troops would attempt to break a strike - but what then? Is there hope of a united front against the imperialists, or even a progressive movement inside the religiously dominated attacks? It is a fanciful hope, but it is at least a hope.

Humor and deadly seriousness.

Read the article from Januari 2001 and tell me it isn't prophetic. I remember Johan Galtung speaking about the American empire and it's decline a year or so ago. He mentioned that in the Soviet Union the humor had flourished (indeed, just read Radio Yerevan). It is so amazingly funny because you can't actually say those things out loud. In a totalitarian society, so the theory goes, jokes are better. While not an absolute truth, I believe there is a lot to it.

The best and most popular analysts of America are not Noam Chomsky, Judith Butler or Marshall Berman. It is the Onion, it is Lewis Black, it is Stephen Colbert and it is John Stewart.

Propaganda wearing thin.

The Ethiopia-Somalia "war" is now more or less revealed as a war between a vassal state of American imperialism and yet unconquered territories. Is this the new tune of Pax Americana? Using and supporting the military and intelligence services of proxy nations rather than hefting it's own banner high and rolling in with the tanks? So far we've seen Israel, Ethiopia, perhaps Iraq. Read this and this. Is it just a matter of time until they try with Latin America? I mean, with troop and bombs this time, rather than with assassination attempts and sowing unrest as has been so popular the last decade or so.

Fascism is capitalism in decay.

While my head is throbbing with pain, I'd like to take this moment and talk a bit loosely about capitalism and fascism. I've talked before about the reactionary waves that the 9/11 attacks brought out everywhere in Europe and America. "Islamofascism", the new Republican buzzword, is so tragical because it is really the pot calling the kettle black. In the shadow of persecution of Muslims, blacks, etc. the old welfare systems are slaughtered. New laws are passed all the time, in the European Union - far away from the watchful eyes of the european peoples. In the United States, there is talk about military intervention to break strikes. Walls rise to hold the Mexicans out from the United States; Israel's state terrorism strikes day after day and their wall swallows up more and more of Palestine. In old Europe we are fortunate. Black people can drown in the straits of Gibraltar. No need for us to build walls.

The media is giving us a pervasive feeling that the barbarians are at the gates (or walls, as it may be). Their teeming masses, their recklessness, their violence, their strange ways. They are our enemies. Or so it is said.

Mao Tsetung famously stated that "political power comes out of the barrel of a gun". Mao was right. Franz Fanon said that the slave must kill his master to truly be free: that in the action of destruction and death there is liberty. In the sense that this is true, 2006 has been a good year for the anti-imperialists of the periphery. But to say that unreservedly would be folly, romantic delusions of what violence is. Lebanon is a country devastated. Palestine bleeds. In the end, we have to realize that it is Joshua from Nashville who is shooting Ali from al-Khwarzim and not a titanic battle of Platonic ideals, locked in a struggle to the death in some heaven. Imperialism lives on, and will live on, for as long as there are capitalist states.

There have been people's victories during 2006, however. Many of them in the center. Election after election has defeated the right (with the narrow and special example of my own nation). The presence of troop abroad has been a deciding factor for the vote. The current of neoliberalism and fascism might be halted. Austria's racists more or less vanished after years as the avant-garde of the new blackshirts of Europe. In Holland, the socialists of (what I understand to be) a typical reformed communist party made a strong advance. One of the first parties in that situation to do so. Yet, everything is hanging in the balance. The Tomb of Lenin writes an interesting post about all of this. While he might forget that capitalism as a system has been written off time and time again, it is worth noting.

But to go back to Mao and the classes struggling through periphery and center. If indeed the tidal wave is breaking, what then? Will the capitalists of the world sit back, go on the defensive again while we repair the breaches in the walls of the welfare state? Will we see a hastened burgeoise offensive against specific groups: like the United States against the Black Panther Party of the 60's? Will the fascists be boosted, like in 20's Italy and Germany? Of course, there is no way of telling what will happen. But for the radical left, I cannot believe that there can be anything but a search for something else. The society that breeds imperialism must be broken with in the ideology and politics of 21st century socialism. It is easy to say, of course, but it bears a lot of meaning. Reformism has rolled back all across Europe; instead creating pseudopoliciary states like Sweden and Britain with the watchful eyes of the government at every turn.

Capitalism might not be dying. But it's weakness leaves huge rifts. With the environmental problems and the upcoming oil crisis that will just deepen and deepen, what will happen? Perhaps it is actually one of the ends of the Kondratrieff cycles and we now have a chance to break decidedly with capitalism. In the end, though, 2007 will be an interesting year politically. With the Israeli threatening nuclear war, the attempt to revive the European Constitution (a pathethic exercise of dry liberal attempts to "give" a people a document it didn't bring out of itself, didn't give birth to in it's struggles for emancipation), with the proxy war of Somalia-Ethiopia and the mass privatization of Iraqi oil we will see if the reactionaries will break and retreat, and if so, if the peoples of the center and periphery will make something off of all of this.

Högersväng ner i helvete.
