Reification and sexism.

I saw the movie Fire ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116308/ ) today. Like Requiem for a Dream, it demasks and brings out the tortorous backside of the reality that we live in. We reproduce patterns of oppression constantly, both ones that are in some manner "beneficial" to us (if we accept the idea that men can gain on women's weakness, or if one ethnicity gains on the weakness of another - which I don't really buy entirely, but whichever) and ones which are bad for us - like sporting burgeoise opinions and voting right wing if you're working class.

It's utterly revolting to come face to face with structures that we all have a part in maintaining, even as simple actors. Free will is a petty lie, and better for us that it is - if it truly existed then it would be completely unbearable to live (as Sartre realized).

I've realized, lately, that it is easy to talk about class struggle as a white man: what must be remembered is that freedom for each individual is a prerequisite for everyone elses freedom, as Marx writes. It is imperative not to back down when faced with disgust over our own actions, or actions that we take part of or in, and even more stupid to laugh it away and think nothing of it.

There are two possibilities when faced with the realization that things aren't set in stone, not god-given or by nature. Two possibilities when you see problems, or when you find weaknesses. Reaction or revolution. The first is timid, cowardly, biased, internal, prejudiced. The second is powerful, dynamic, external and active.

Every people must liberate itself, every sex fight itself free, every class struggle for freedom. Freedom from oppression, which is the most important freedom of all (perhaps it really is the only freedom possible).

We're all bound to liberate ourselves, and as a part in that lend a hand in liberating everyone else.

Working Class & German Ideology.

'Allo, comrades! It's a strengthened Björn that writes. I've realized after some thinking that the coming four years will be tough, but they will be rewarding if all the people who have been politicised and honestly scared by the Swedish burgeoise victory. They should be, in all honesty. Though they take it slow, their intention is to attack the welfare system and the unions that protect it, like every right wing government. If what the Social Democrats have done has been bad, what the right wing intends to do will be even more so. Increased social divisions, high unemployment, increased racism... well, take your pick. Right wing politics can never solve these problem on it's own. Indeed, the upper classes gain from racism that divides the working class.

I'm actually really happy that so many have shown an interest in organizing themselves, God knows that we need it. Membership and activism is the basis of the left: remember, we're going to fight, and fight hard. Please, if you are worried about the world you are in, organize yourself. It's not terribly hard, nor terribly expensive. "En kan inte göra allt, men alla kan göra något".

Now, then, let's consider a quick clarification on the working classes if you feel that class politics isn't for you: the working class is defined as the people who work for someone, not their income. It does mean that parts of the burgeoise become workers - they form an upper crust of the working class due to their intimate connections with the owners, and often own a great deal of property themselves. But they, too, would in most cases gain from a social revolution of the means of production.

I recommend you to join parties, go to demonstrations, go to meetings. Otherwise you will suffer from it, I promise. You can create a better world. The left is broad and diverse, there is always someone who you can find will be good for you. And remember, you can always walk around and be mad at things yourself but you will never be able to change them on your own. Go to a meeting, join a party!

Vänstern nu.

Igår skrev jag en mycket arg, och en kanske ganska dum post på fyllan på helgon. Det är en oturlig utveckling att ta ut sin ilska på människor runt sig. Samtidigt kan jag stå för vad jag tycker. Ofta florerar fördomar vars grund inte egentligen finns utan bara är där, som inte kan redovisas, och det är jävligt tråkigt. Samtidigt tror jag att vi går en ganska mörk framtid till mötes. Människors fördomar i tanken är dock inte lika illa som den öppna rasism som spys ut på t.ex. helgons forum.

Nu väntar stora strider, och jag tror att alla de som röstade för högern eller inte med vänstern kommer kanske att finna att saker blir väldigt jobbiga. Man kan ju tycka det är en bra sak, men jag hoppas att människor kommer organisera sig även om de varit opolitiska innan. Det är inte svårare än att gå till ett politiskt möte en gång i veckan, att prata med lite folk. Ingen kan göra allt, men alla kan göra något. I slutändan handlar det om alla de saker vi riskerar att förlora som vi tillkämpat oss innan.

Saker och ting blir inte bättre av sig själva, men de blir bättre av kollektiv kamp. En kamp mot de som förlorar (för de gör det) på politiken från de som inte har.

Det är ju lugnt för Obbe att vara glad, han är rik, det är också kanske lugnt för Ola att vara glad - han tror ju faktiskt liberalismen funkar. That's fair.
Jag tror dock att det stora spektrumet av människor inte riktigt tänker så, flamman (www.flamman.se) skriver en del om varför vi förlorade valet. Jag tror de har rätt. Vi förlorade på sosseskandaler, på en oerhört duktig och kostsam högerkampanj, på Vänsterpartiets splittring (där Demokratisk Vänster är ett populistiskt symptom), etc. Vi förlorade dock inte på vår politik.

Nu gäller ett arbete för kollektavtalen som framförallt är hotade för ungdomarna igenom Centerns förslag. Det gäller också att agitera så att människor går in i organisationer, sluter sig till rörelserna och förstår hur viktigt de är och vilken makt de själva besitter och ett arbete för att nydana vänstern. Det gäller ifrån socialdemokratin till vänsterpartiet. Man kan tro att man kan stå åt sidan i den här konflikten som kommer, men det kommer man inte. Att välja att inte göra något är lika politiskt som att göra det, kom ihåg det. Kom också ihåg att ni har mer förmåga till makt än vad ni tror, att ni kommer förlora på att inte organisera er, på att vänstern är bred och mångfacetterad. Man kan aldrig hålla med alla om allt: det är helt omöjligt. Jag håller definitivt inte med varken Vänsterns Studentförbund eller Vänsterpartiet om stora delar av deras politik. Däremot får man inte ge upp tron på att man kan förändra saker, och att man kan slåss. Släng bort fördomarna om politik och politiker, att haspla idéer om en typ av människor som man fått lära sig ifrån amerikansk TV är jättefånigt. Ta tag i det istället. Varje person på vår sida gör sådan oerhörd skillnad, vi har knappt någon media och verkligen inga störra resurser. Så är det.

En lång post om valet.

Goddag, kamrater. Jag skriver för att jag måste skriva, för att politiken är någonting som man lever och vars medvetenhet och praxis man måste utveckla som människa. Grekerna trodde mycket på det, även om de utestängde majoriteten, och jag tror på det också. Då var polis, eller forum som romarna tog över, det medium där man talade om politiken. Nu är det bloggarna, media, etc. Vi når ut, vi talar, vi diskuterar etik, realism, ekonomi, förståelse, taktik, etc. Det är politik, planerandet och överläggandet av våra liv.

Årets valrörelse har kantats av en grupp olika problem för vänstern. Framförallt är det en mycket skicklig taktisk höger - att använda ord som "ny" och sedan göra en makeover (ordet är perfekt för borgerligheten: att byta yta men behålla innehåll efter nyliberalismens fiasko förra valet), att inrikta sig på en pseudokampanj mot socialdemokratin och peka på alla de hål som en överväldigande högerekonomisk politik skapat. Dessutom har man byggt "alliansen" som en ytterligare vikt i den retoriska debatten.

I Sverige saknar vi riktig vänstermedia, det är därför som moderaterna kunde presenteras som de har gjort. Att vi tagit in så mycket beror på aktivisterna inom vänstern som kunnat komma ut. Ali Esbati på sin blog http://esbati.blogspot.com har skrivit mycket och refererat mycket kring hur det här har fungerat.

Det andra som jag tror är ett problem är att socialdemokraterna inte presenterat sin politik tillräckligt, ja, socialdemokratiskt. Istället har det blivit Vänsterpartiets uppgift att göra det. Flamman (www.flamman.se) har presenterat en del kring att socialdemokratin har misslyckats med att vara socialdemokratiska - detta på grund utav högerflyglarna som tagit över. Svenska folket vill ha välfärd och vänsterpolitik, men de vill inte ha skandaler, missbruk eller någonting annat.

Klasspolitiken måste bli skärpare inom vänstern. Det måste vara det som alla förstår, som alla talar om. All nuvarande historia är historien om klassernas kamp, som Marx sa. Det är något som man förstår, något som enar och något man kan föra fram. Invandrare, kvinnor, låginkomsttagare, socialdemokrater och vänsterpartister, kommunister, socialister, syndikalister, industriarbetare och bagare, vårdbiträden och busschaufförer. Det är också någonting som verkligen fungerar och ger gensvar.

Det som är bäst med valrörelsen för Vänsterpartiet är att vi är helade nu. Jag tror verkligen det. Vi gick in i valet splittrade, och vissa fraktionerade än mer (vilket är idiotiskt: varje socialist måste ha sin första lojalitet till arbetarklassen och inte till sitt eget parti). Lars Ohly har gjort fruktansvärt bra ifrån sig och etablerat sig själv som en mycket duktig partiledare och debattör. Förhoppningsvis slutar Vänsterpartiet med att vara ett superhjälteparti som rycker in för att rädda några förtryckta någon gång och blir ett parti för att organisera arbetarklassen på riktigt. Arbetar man röstar man på vänstern. Så skall det vara.

Imorgon röstar vi. Efter det fortsätter kampen, den slutar aldrig. I motvind eller medvind.

Freedom - is the world closed?

The concept of freedom has intrigued me a lot, and continue to bewilder me. Perhaps it is what Marx called the "snare of abstract though" that we should avoid, but it is interesting mental exercise if nothing else.

What I oppose above all is the idea that freedom would be a Platonic Idea. Freedom seems far more to be freedom from something, freedom in degrees. Freedom demands a relation to something, because you are always free from something - from debt, from your own prejudices, from gravity.

I've written about the queerness of freedom before, and I think that thinking about it as relations, even as a nexus of relations, makes freedom intelligible and reveals our actual usage of the word. Using it in a platonic sense must certainly stem from linguistical confusion and political ideology.

Consider my freedom to surf the web and write annoying blog posts that no-one actually reads. If I go outside, that freedom still remains but cannot be actualized. If the Internet crashes, then obviously that freedom is entirely gone. I can also be hampered in many other ways, all pertaining to my ability to write this post. They form a nexus of some sort.

So the world starts "closed". Our natural abilities gives us freedoms. To operate things, to move, to speak, etc. From the very particular to the very general. These freedoms depend on our abilities, our intelligence and so on and so forth. They are as categories that are opened to us as we progress.

Something about the American Proletariat.

This is a small post, perhaps a very small one, about the workers of the United States. I think that it is far more beneficial to speak of the American proletariat and it's movements rather than the parties that exist, mostly because of their small membership.

Is a new left dawning in the land across the Atlantic? In the world's most advanced capital state there seem to be signs of a gradual awakening of class consciousness. This very much comes from the immigrants, who bring with a radical culture from their homes in Latin America. It also comes from disenfranchised groups, such as the black communities of Los Angeles - and from non-ethnic mobilization in unions.

The Republican party have shown who they are concerned about. www.pww.org reports a lot of facts concerning this, as does indymedia.org. The downsizing of what social security this is and dumping of the wages in favour of massive capitalists, as well as the problems abroad cause rising tensions.

Tension, it seem, should be more of a key word in marxism. Certainly, it seems as if increased tension, increased economic competition is what really creates class struggle. Therein is the key. For a long time, the US proletariat has lived relatively well on a small lower class that have been "super exploited" and divided along ethnic groups (blacks vs. whites, latinos vs. koreans, etc) but as the upper class ups the stakes there is disturbance in the system. With an ill-fated war that grows worse by the day, with international hostility towards the openly imperialist ambitions of the United States (from both radical and reactionary groups) and an economy that is sagging together the old neoliberal agenda might finally loose pace. Or it might not.

But certainly, it seems time for an awakening. Now that marxism has departed center stage, it is needed far more than ever. Because this is not something postmodernism can truly understand so easily: this is competition for resources. This is a war between classes. That is multiplying everywhere, ripples on the pond. From Saudi Arabia and the oil sheiks to China to the United States: the high castle of capitalism.

If things continue in this way, and they are showing no sign of stopping, then we can perhaps hope for a new left in the United States. But what is needed is not a short-term change, but rather, a deep class-consciousness must take root and communities must be built. If we are ever to succeed, we must overcome our differences that have been so ingrained in us, especially in the US, perhaps, and cooperate to take power over our lives. Perhaps an Eugene V. Debbs is required again, perhaps not.

Certainly, though, it is the domestic tension that shall lead somewhere and not idealism with the people of Iraq or otherwise. Though it remains important to highlight the callousness of the Bush administration, the fight must be over the most /direct/ material interests of the working class of the United States. Today is Labour Day, and though it is an instrument of the capitalist class (created to cease May 1st celebrations by a US senator back in the day) this as so much else created by capitalism must be embraced and said: This is ours!

This is our world!
